Women Gaze | La Galerie
La Galerie presents ‘Women Gaze’ a group exhibition showcasing a selection of thought provoking images by four female photographers. This exhibition brings together the unique viewpoints of the new generation: Hong Kong artists Kayee C and Lau Wai on their personal perspectives on our society, and examine both self and social identites. Both artists construct narratives of oneself and the connection with our surroundings through familiar yet uncanny scenarois, that allows the audience to make a connection with. Former photojournalist Anat Givon interprets the vibrant energy of cityscape in Hong Kong with a surreal touch and conveys the strong emotion of her observations to the viewer. Where Catherine Henriette shows the beauty of China’s natural landscape in peace and tranquility, quietly reveals her insights on the country’s economic, cultural and social evolution for around thirty years. 4 March - 25 April 2021

Revelation - Guided Tour by Antoine Rameau (Part 1)
In this exhibition, Antoine Rameau presents his new series of ink painted collage on old books, magazines and newspapers dated back to 1920s – 1950s, entitled Empreintes, which can simultaneously be translated into English as “prints” and “tracks”. His passion for empreintes was nurtured in the wild forest from his childhood, where he would find tracks of the wild animals in the mud and snow that blossoms his imaginations. Antoine applies a similar process in his works: starting from an ink print of a hardwood piece, and combined with finger painting of dots, a technique that was inspired by aboriginal art, to spiritually represent dreams and Mother Nature. “The old publication materials that I used as background in these collages are all prints and tracks in their own ways, They are the testimony of the author, the journalist, and their antique textures is another “print “of passing time.” says Antoine. Antoine’s works speak not only to his childhood memories of his home forest, but also pays tribute to Mother Nature and allows the audience to follow his prints and tracks in our daily life. Chou Ching Hui - The Creation of Animal Farm No.6 and No.8 | La Galerie
In this video, Chou Ching Hui speaks about his work Animal Farm No. 6 and Animal Farm No.8, from probably one of his most ambitious projects Animal Farm. Animal Farm is based on a five-year-long photography project that involved Chou's theatrical set with staged props and performers, mimicked the sumptuous yet often baffled life of modern civilization. Through delicately exquisite yet vibrantly colored images, Chou conjured a kind of hyper-real atmosphere to create his own photographic language. The complete series of Animal Farm features nine sets of photographs, installations and video works. The images urge the viewers to re-examine their situation, to become conscious of their constraints, and to ruminate on the possibilities of struggling free. Chou negotiated to use Hsinchu Zoo and Shoshan Zoo in Kaohsiung as the sets of this photography project. Shooting in a real zoo, Chou uses the cages as an allusion to modern people’s lives. “The society is as a cage, where we are jeering at the people living in there” says Chou.

Almond Chu : Inspiration on Parade | La Galerie
In this interview, Almond shares the stories and events that inspired each work within the Parade series. “For years, my works have been exploring the ecology of the society and the issue of existence. I take repeated actions of individuals to represent the value orientation of the society. While the world has been unifying into one, our thinking tends to gear towards one end. People have become faceless with no personal opinion. They blindly follow the trend, repeat what others have said, and are unclear of their values of living." The multiple repeated images of an individual depicted in the every day landscapes of the city create a harmonious yet disturbing ambience. These surreal parade marching scenarios reflects an inherent violence behind and through the perfectly arranged formations.

Vincent Fournier - Space Utopia I La Galerie
“I photographed both the past and the future of space exploration between 2007 and now, from the space race in the 1960s to the NASA SLS launch vehicle expected to go to Mars. The present decade marks the transition from political to economic considerations in space, and the introduction of a worldwide dimension. After the Cold War and the domination of the super powers, the space sector became less of a military priority than an economic one also involving investments by private rms with multiple interests: communication, science, research and development, ecology, health, technology, and even space tourism.” – Vincent Fournier

Vincent Fournier - The Man Machine | La Galerie
‘The Man Machine project is a reflection on how artificial creatures such as robots or other avatars can evolve in our day-to-day life. For this speculative fiction series I staged several humanoid robots in realistic reconstructions of usual domestic scenes: at work, at home, in the streets, during leisure... Situations suggest both empathy and detachment towards the robot. My aim was to create a balance between the spectator and the robot, between a process of identification and distance. We find this idea in the “the Uncanny Valley ” – a scientific theory elaborated by the Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori which states that the more a robot resembles a human being, the more its imperfections seem monstrous to us. The current development of these artificial creatures in our society brings fascination but also the frightening issue of the social acceptance of these changes.’ – Vincent Fournier

Vincent Fournier - Post Natural History: Archeology of The Future | La Galerie
The Bestiary— Archaeology of the Future “The Post Natural History project shows the archives of an imagined future caught between memory and projection where science, technology and living organisms have all intersected to create a handful of ultra-developed species with highly technological capabilities.” “Based on conversations with synthetic biology specialists and presented with the aesthetic of encyclopedic boards these “upcoming living species” are familiar yet strange. Indeed, we “know” the rabbit or the lizard, but upon closer inspection, we realize certain differences. For example, the dragonfly possesses a transparent glass belly in which a luminescent sensor measures the rate of pollution.” “Just like the bestiaries of origin from the Middle Age that were mixing the fantastic with the real, this imaginary archive is a mirror for our hope, fear, and phantasms about the unknown. These surrealistic species are classified by alphabetical order with captions describing their new traits. My inspirations come from old illustrations, painting, poesy, myths and scientific facts.” – Vincent Fournier

Catherine Henriette - Conte d’hiver, Conte d’été | La Galerie
For around thirty years, Catherine Henriette has been observing China, with its economic, cultural and social evolution. Thirty years in which the pulse of the country has been rising, things have been moving fast and probably too fast. She has seen the transformation of the landscapes and cities, which have become alienated and spoilt, where everything was being sacrificed in the name of development and profit at any price. As a firsthand witness to this frenzy, Catherine Henriette paused time with her Leica camera and rolls of film. With the modern China as her backdrop, she has captured the vanishing points and figures, and photographed them like a shifting mirage. ”The patient waiting for pure lines and outlines, the subtle constancy of the emerging image… It was like a tale halfway between reality and my imagination.” – Catherine Henriette

Huang Jing & Alexis Reynaud Photography Exhibition - The Works RTHK I La Galerie
The high density and grid like urban landscape of Hong Kong have long been a source of inspiration for both local and international artists. Swiss photographer Alexis Reynaud has responded by creating a photographic mapping called “Hong Kong Matrix”, to portray the idea of “getting lost in these meanderings”. At the other extreme, the black and white photographs of Chinese artist Huang Jing in “Colorless and Tasteless” mostly echo the tranquility and abstraction of Chinese paintings. Works by both artists were shown in a joint exhibition at La Galerie in Central.
